5 Things I love About Bookkeeping

1. Freedom & Flexibility

I mentioned this in my previous post, but pursuing a career that allows me to have freedom and flexibility is by far my favorite thing about bookkeeping. Cloud based technology and various software have allowed for many bookkeeping tasks to be done online. This allows bookkeepers to build virtual businesses where you can work with a range of clientele from the comfort of your own home.

2. Organization

Bookkeepers do a wide range of tasks from paying bills, to collecting payments on accounts, to ensuring that income and expenses are categorized correctly. At the root of all of these tasks is organization. For someone that likes working with numbers and finds gratification in making sure things are in the correct bucket, this really is a perfect career to combine both.

3. Opportunity for Growth

For any business, if you have the correct processes and systems in place, the sky is the limit for how big it can grow. Luckily, bookkeeping is one of those industries that, at its core, is built on processes, which not only makes it easy to learn, but also easy to replicate. While you have to put in the time and effort initially, and go through a lot of trial and error to see what works and what doesn’t, once you get these processes in place, the business will be much easier to grow and maintain.

In addition, while there is a lot of talk that artificial intelligence will render bookkeeping obsolete, I don’t think that’s true at all. Yes, technology has already made great strides in reducing time spent on certain mundane and repetitive bookkeeping activities, but there will always need to be a level of human interaction to ensure the machines are doing their jobs correctly and also to interpret data.

4. Helping Businesses Succeed

My main goal from when I first started this business has been to empower my clients with knowledge so that they can make smart decisions for their own businesses. Not every business owner is savvy with finances, nor should they be if it’s not the industry they are in. If I can provide my clients with accurate and up-to-date financials, they will then be able to make better choices that will positively affect their business and hopefully, increase their profit.

5. Relationships

At all of the jobs that I’ve worked at, I’ve really enjoyed interacting with clients. I like establishing that connection and knowing that I am providing them with either a product or service they are in need of.

While my goal is to build a virtual bookkeeping business, it will still allow me to have those relationships with clients and hopefully become a trusted advisor. Money is a very personal and sensitive topic for so many people so if I can get my clients to trust me with their finances, I think it will be a huge victory and testament to the relationship we’ve built.
